Familiar Phrases at First Baptist ChurchIf you attend First Baptist Church in Watertown, NY for any length of time, you will hear our Pastor and leadership reference these phrases often.
The church has lovingly been dubbed by Pastor Smith as "The Lighthouse on the Square" and "The Whosoever Church". Warm welcomes from the pulpit almost always include one of these titles while introducing newcomers to our church family. Another phrase you will inevitably get to know is "Jesus Period". Each of these phrases have special significance in defining who we have committed to serve, what our mission in the community is, and/or what our emphasis is. |
The Lighthouse on the Square
First Baptist Church sits on what is referred to as "The Square", which is downtown Watertown, NY, and we see our church's ministry as a lighthouse to the community there and beyond. Lighthouses are known for being lifesavers in storms, helping to guide to safety. We, at First Baptist Church, want to be a light to those struggling in the dark throes of life, sharing with them what Christ came to accomplish here on earth, how much He loves them, and how He desires to set them free from all that ensnares them. John 8:12 says: Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. (KJV)
The Whosoever Church
We have a heart of compassion for people who are in need. We count it an honor to minister to everyone God leads to our doors. Our congregation cuts across all societal lines, including those on the streets, criminals, and drug addicts. We do not shy away from caring for those who are generally not welcomed or loved elsewhere. We don't look at color, wealth (or lack of), or anything else that may be a dividing wall in regular society. Our message of reconciliation to our Heavenly Father through Jesus Christ is for everyone, and that life need not be lived in despair and hopelessness. There is freedom in Christ! For who? Whosoever! Whatever condition that you're in, you're welcome here at the First Baptist Church.
Jesus Period
What Pastor means when he proclaims: Jesus Period! is that we need Jesus Christ, and we don't need anything else of the world. We live by the words of Jesus, by the pattern of Jesus. There is nothing more that we need to fulfill us, to lead us, to guide us other than Jesus Christ. Jesus Period. Not Jesus plus the world. Not Jesus plus psychology. Not Jesus plus anything else.
